I have been a working artist for more than 20 years.  My media range from clay to paint to pastel.  Most of what I create is representational, but I try to avoid being completely old fashioned by composing the images with modern aesthetics and color choices.  The scale of my work ranges from 50 foot tall relief sculptures to three inch watercolors and all sizes in between. 

Visual art is a language that becomes native through long hours of immersion.  I have developed a generalized conceptual understanding of the large principles of artistic expression.  Through commercial work I have created thousands of pieces, mostly pastel drawings, often repeating images.  This gave me vast amounts of practice and necessitated the solving of innumerable graphic problems.  When puzzled, I usually consult the Masters for guidance and technical ideas.  I have begun teaching privately which brings its own new level of understanding, as I must verbalize what I know tacitly.

My methods usually include the collecting of images, photographic and sketched. Then the stronger images are translated into pencil studies to gain insight.  Finally, I select a size and medium that suits the project and I begin work.  I prefer to have at least two pieces going at the same time; I can tweak the nearly complete picture while establishing and refining the newer one.  Long, solitary hours are necessary to bring an image to perfection.  It is extremely satisfying to complete a piece that works.
