These ambitious, crowd-sourced projects were created by passersby. The process begins with a large photograph that is cut into hundreds of small squares, each with coordinates printed on the back, that are tossed into a small box. Participants randomly drew one square from the box, then they replicated their square, in pencil, in a corresponding but larger square on an enormous sheet of sturdy paper. Although the finished work contains few “virtuoso art marks,” the accumulation of accurate marks in their correct locations adds up to a generally photo-realistic image.
